I really enjoyed watching the Grammys last night. I thought LL Cool J was a great host, and it was fun to see Adele, Rhianna and many other artists perform. I liked Bon Iver's acceptance speech, and Jennifer Hudson's tribute to Whitney Houston was beautiful. Of course I also had to watch the red carpet coverage to see what everyone was wearing. Although there were some gorgeous gowns, my favorite looks of the night were black ensembles, particularly Rhianna's sleek dress and gleaming gold accessories.

I know I shouldn't complain about winter, especially this year when it's been so mild -- at least compared to the record-breaking amounts of snow we've gotten the past few years. But I can't help it. I'm ready for spring! So I'm going to dream about sunshine and flowers and rain showers, and I'm going to pretend I'll be spending spring in this lovely waterfront Victorian in Massachusetts, featured in Better Homes and Gardens. Doesn't it feel so fresh and cheerful?

Did you watch the Superbowl on Sunday? While I was interested in the game and the commercials, I was most excited to catch Madonna's halftime performance. I thought she was great and I loved seeing her perform a range of her songs. In honor of her opening number, Vogue put together a slideshow of the Material Girl's appearances in the magazine over the years. What a Trip!

We're back from Las Vegas and exhausted -- in a good way! It was a great trip. We spent our days walking along the Strip and popping into hotels to explore, shop and gamble a bit. At night, we went out for long dinners and walked some more. We saw the Bellagio fountains, an aquarium and a fantastic Cirque du Soliel show. While it was fun to see a new place -- and Vegas is truly unlike anywhere I've visited -- my favorite part was simply spending time with our friends.

Vegas, Baby!

We're off to Las Vegas! Over Thanksgiving, my husband and I went out with some friends who were in town. Over carafes of wine, the idea of going to Las Vegas came up, and somehow a week later four couples were booking tickets from the East Coast, West Coast and Midwest for a long weekend in Sin City. I've never visited Vegas, but I'm excited to see what it's all about.

Good morning! How was your weekend? Mine was very relaxed. My husband and I were both sick, so we spent a lot of time on the couch and watched a lot of movies. But with a snowstorm outside, being holed up at home was actually quite nice.

I definitely wouldn't mind spending some time in this space, a Brooklyn home featured on Design*Sponge. What I love most about it is the contrast between the moody dark rooms and the bright white spaces. I also like the mix of materials and textures, and the great collection of art. And that little patio is pretty fantastic, no?

A Private Paradise

While I'm not on vacation this week, I'm still dreaming about the Caribbean. And why not dream big, right? For at least one night of my life, I'd love to stay at the Jade Mountain in St. Lucia. I've been to the lush island before, but never visited this resort. It's tucked into a hillside overlooking the ocean and the green Piton mountains. Rooms are incredibly private, with infinity pools and only three walls so nothing keeps you away from the stunning views. I know a girl who spent a few nights of her honeymoon here. She said when she and her husband walked into the room, she started weeping because it was so beautiful. Let's have a peek:

Twelve years ago today my husband and I went on our first date. We were both in college, and on this day all those years ago I had no idea he would be the one -- the one I'd choose to build a life with, the one I'd share all sorts of experiences and adventures with. I hope we can tell our grandkids one day about how we didn't know each other in the 1900s (how old will we sound?!) but that in the 2000s we've always been together.

A Change in Plans

So, we're not in the Caribbean this week after all. My little nephew got sick, and at the last minute -- at four in the morning as we were assembled at my parents' house about to head to the airport -- we had to cancel our family trip. We're all really disappointed, but it was the right decision.

Being at home Sunday night gave me the chance to watch the Golden Globes, specifically, the red carpet coverage before the awards show. I can't decide which trend I like better -- pretty blush-hued dresses or vibrant-colored gowns. Here are a few of both!

I'm off on a weeklong vacation in the Caribbean! This is one of my favorite places in the world, where my family has been going every year since I was eleven. It's our brief moment to escape winter. But more than that, it's a time to simply be together in an absolutely gorgeous setting. I can't wait for sunshine and blue skies, sand and the ocean. See you in a week!

So, tangerine is the color of 2012. I'm cool with this! It took me some time to appreciate orange hues. My high school colors were orange and black -- not the freshest combination. But I really like vibrant shades like tangerine. I'd love to choose a single accent for an outfit or a room.

I recently saw the new The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I enjoyed the movie, but what I liked most of all was the incredible house featured in it. Sure, it was the home of the villain, but the minimalist architecture, huge planes of glass and white furniture made me forget about all that!

A combination I can't get enough of is black and white. I find myself lately black-and-white-ifying everything around me -- my outfits, my home decor, my accessories. This weekend was wonderfully low-key. I slept in and took naps. I had brunch with friends and watched movies. My husband made an organic fruit salad and we took the pup for a long walk in the fresh air and sunshine. I love weekends filled with simple pleasures like these.

Happy new year! It feels wonderful to say 2012 has begun, and that's partly due to this nice long weekend. My husband and I spent New Year's Eve with my sister, her husband and their adorable baby. We had margaritas and burritos -- and a lot of laughs -- and then we went home and rang in the new year in bed with the pup. Neighbors even set off fireworks in the park behind our house at midnight! The rest of the weekend, we relaxed at home and enjoyed the last few days of our Christmas decorations (I love how the ornaments from our Disco Christmas party cast cool patterns on the ceiling). What's even better is the long weekend continues today.

I hope your new year is off to a fantastic start!

It's hard to believe 2011 is coming to a close. It's been a great year, and even a few difficult times have made me more grateful than ever for the wonderful people in my life. Of course the big question this weekend is what to do on New Year's Eve! I typically like to go out and whoop it up with friends -- and kiss my husband at midnight. But this year I'm craving a quiet night in. We'll see how the night shapes up, but no matter what we do, I'm looking forward to ringing in 2012!

I was saddened yesterday to hear about the passing of Helen Frankenthaler. The artist was so influential, and her paintings are are mesmerizing in their sense of freedom and expressive color. I always love seeing her canvases in person. What an inspiration.

This holiday season, I've been drawn to metallics -- gleaming silvers and rich golds. I've used them in my Christmas decorating, and they got me thinking about the artist Gustav Klimt. While The Kiss is certainly his most popular work, I'm inspired by his portrait Adele Bloch-Bauer I. The gold and geometric shapes seem the perfect starting point for a glittery New Year's Eve look.

Wonderful Weekend

This was such a fantastic holiday weekend! We kicked it off with a Disco Christmas party on Thursday, complete with disco ball ornaments, holiday songs set to disco rhythms and friends decked out in sparkly clothes. On Christmas Eve, we hosted my husband's parents and had a nice evening relaxing by the fire. And on Christmas we went to church and spent the evening at my parent's house, with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins stopping by as the night went on. And today, my husband and I both have the day off. We're not sure yet what we'll do, but I hope it's something to make the most of this last day of a great long weekend.

Let there be Light

I understand today is the darkest day of the year. It's comforting to know the days ahead of this one will be more light-filled, that the rest of winter will not be any darker than today. And I love how we seek illumination this time of year, how our candles, lanterns and strings of twinkly lights cut into the darkness. It makes me think of this T.S. Eliot quote: "So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing."

I'm afraid we will not have a white Christmas this year. We've had a few flurries but the snow has melted quickly. No matter -- I'm going to daydream about this Montana ski lodge, featured in Elle Decor. I love the clean lines, soothing colors and hints of lodge style in the stone fireplace and wood beams. Maybe thinking of this place will calm me down as I do some last-minute Christmas shopping and prep the house for our holiday party tomorrow. Here's hoping!

I had a wonderful weekend filled with lots of Christmasy activities. I baked cookies with my mom, went to "The Nutcracker" with a friend, and my husband and I listened to Christmas music as we repainted the kitchen. It's not necessarily the best timing to do the latter, but we need to finish this task before our Christmas party Thursday night -- yikes! We went to our friends' holiday party on Friday night, which was so much fun, and left as snow had just begun to fall. The following morning I woke up to sunshine and a snow-covered view. I so love this time of year!

I'm not typically one for rustic style, but I must admit the headline on House to Home promising a "romantic Alpine chalet" drew me in. The home -- nestled in the French Alps, no less -- is a nice mix of woods, clean lines and cozy touches like faux fur throws and a roaring fireplace. I wouldn't mind tucking away here for Christmas, or maybe the rest of winter!

Tradition

This weekend brought a holiday tradition: choosing a photo for our family Christmas card. My parents started sending out an annual card when I was a baby, and the convention has continued ever since. Today, it includes husbands, sometimes our dogs and now my little nephew.

There's always a bit of drama involved. As kids, my sister and I dreaded the day we'd have to go out and take the photo. Our once-hippie parents almost always wanted to shoot outdoors. So there was the year we had to sit up in a tree and the time we crouched amid snowy bushes in our front yard. More recently, the challenge is us six adults agreeing on one photo. It's no easy task! But it's always fun, and I cherish that we have these annual pictures of our family.

This photo is one of my favorites. If this shot is the best one of the bunch that year -- with me clutching a cracker, my sister laughing between bouts of crying and our hair flying in the wind -- I'd love to see the outtakes!

I find the artwork of Claire Desjardins so encouraging. Her paintings are bright and exuberant but also feel contemplative and personal. She writes in her artist statement, "My work is about me and my existence in this world. A Merry Weekend

This weekend brought some much-needed rest, plus some fun outings. I remember watching it in high school, and seeing Felicity go to college in New York City made me eager to go off to school. Impressions

What a lovely weekend this was. While it was filled with lots of activity -- house projects, a family get-together, holiday shopping -- what meant the most to me were the small moments, the little impressions. My family gathered around a table that my mom set so beautifully. Laughing with my ten- and sixteen-year-old cousins. My nephew trying mashed potatoes for the first time. My dad and husband collaborating on a project. My pup sleeping with her back against mine. Likewise, these photographs by Katie Lloyd remind me of the incredible beauty of a single moment.

I think this is going to be a very full weekend. We're starting phase two of our kitchen remodel: we're installing new lighting and we're also going to repaint. (Will and I recently admitted to each other that we don't like the green we chose for the walls after all. Dang!)

On Saturday, my parents are hosting a big Thanksgiving bash -- a week early since my grandma is having hip replacement surgery next week. I absolutely love getting together with my dad's side the family; my relatives are a lot of fun and always tell great stories. And then on Sunday, my mom and sister and I are planning to have a shopping day. We're hoping to get a lot of our Christmas gift-buying done. Let the weekend begin!

I used to balk at anything traditional. I thought the style was stuffy and old-fashioned and rooted in rules I didn't want to follow. But I've come around a bit and now appreciate classic touches in homes, like this Montreal house featured in Style at Home. But what I love most about this place is how the homeowners keep things unexpected. The brown velvet tufted ottoman, the glam chandeliers in the kitchen, the pink wallpaper and blue armchair in the dining room -- these things prove a properly grown-up home and a sense of fun are not mutually exclusive. Aren't you glad?

Favorite Things

Last week, we celebrated my husband's birthday by honoring his favorite things. Each day, I'd give him a little gift -- a new shirt, his favorite scotch, the aftershave he loves -- and this weekend we did some of his favorite things. We went out for sushi. We relaxed in the mornings, him with a movie and me with a big stack of magazines. We had beers at his favorite brewpub and brunch at a lakeside restaurant. We met up with friends one night, went to the symphony with his parents and cuddled with the pup at home. Here are a few glimpses of the fun weekend:

'Love Hard'

Today is my husband's birthday. It's hard to believe he and I have known one another for a third of our lives. It's been such a blessing to grow with him and share so much over the years. I admire the incredible sense he's always had of who he is and I love the combination of strength, quirks, wit and compassion that make him uniquely him. The way Bob Marley describes it, I think he's the one guy who's perfect for me, and I can't wait to celebrate his birthday this weekend.

This weekend was wonderful. There's something so comforting about going to my grandma's, to this place that has been the same my entire life, from the wallpaper to the shag carpeting. It's nice to feel that there are places that don't change. That coming here will always mean hugs and laughter, fish-fry dinners, afternoon naps and walks by the lake. That even though my grandpa is gone, we still feel his presence here. Yet it's a comfort to see things change, too, to watch new generations like my nephew bring new energy and even more love to this place.

It was so much fun dressing up as Black Swan for Halloween this weekend. And I realized the ballet aesthetic doesn't just appeal to me as a costume. In one way or another, I've always admired the look of dancers: their strength and grace, as well as their style. I love ballet flats, swishy skirts, off-the-shoulder tops and wrap sweaters. I like pale pinks, soft whites and pretty grays, and anything that shows off the collarbone or back. So gorgeous!

It's Halloween weekend, and I'm quite excited about it. I love dressing up and going to costume parties. I have a rule about never repeating a Halloween costume, so it's fun to come up with something new each time around. This year, I'm channeling Natalie Portman in Black Swan. I have a leotard from a ballet class I took in college, and I actually wore white ballet slippers at my wedding; all I had to buy was a tutu, some feathery accessories and a lot of black eye makeup. As Halloween approaches, I'm more apt to appreciate things with a darker, creepier or more macabre side. Perhaps that's why I'm intrigued by these works by EmiPhotograph. I like how x-ray images of human anatomy are juxtaposed with text, maps, equations, trees and even butterflies. And the idea of looking into someone -- and perhaps glimpsing what's hidden within -- matches up perfectly with the mood of the holiday.

I live in a big college town. The university is responsible for a lot of energy and forward-thinking in the city -- and quite a few fun events. I'm going to the homecoming football game with a group of girlfriends tomorrow, and tonight my husband and I are going to a red tie gala. I was a bit too young for the show when it came out in the mid-nineties, but I'm loving it now. It feels so true to that time, with Claire Danes as fifteen-year-old Angela Chase capturing just what it's like to be in high school. This weekend was such gift. Autumn had tinged the trees beautiful colors while the sun was shining and temperatures reached into the seventies. My husband and I spent Saturday afternoon at a state park. We hiked up a rocky trail to a vista, relaxed by a lake, then drove home with the windows down and music blaring. I can't think of a better way to enjoy such a gorgeous fall day.

On this beautiful sunny morning, I'm feeling happy and inspired -- and these gorgeous paintings by Yolanda Sanchez match my mood. Aren't these works amazing? They're based on the concept of the garden, and the artist writes: "My work, in general, in a search for re-enchantment, for a way to reach below the surface of things, to find that point of connection with life. I want to engage the viewer in a sensory experience, one that is un-camera-like, un-computer-like. My goal is to nudge the viewer into a deeper experience of the present, where the 'circumference of self' is dissolved -- to provide a moment of contemplation without literally telling a story."

This was a fun and particularly sports-filled weekend. Every day brought new baseball and football games to watch. Yet the highlight was going to a Milwaukee Brewers game on Saturday. We usually make it to a few games each year, but this was the first game of the playoffs so it was something special. The stands were absolutely packed and the energy was incredible. Every time the Brewers made a good hit or scored, the place erupted. My husband is a huge baseball fan, so it was really neat to experience it all with him. Here are a few glimpses of our game day:

I had such a nice birthday weekend. I went out with coworkers Thursday evening and girlfriends Friday night. But the best was spending Saturday and Sunday with my husband and the pup. We slept in, went out for a bit and then happily flopped back into bed at night. Since life has been so busy lately, this simple, sweet, low-key weekend was the absolutely perfect way to celebrate.

It's really snuck up on me this year, but tomorrow is my birthday! Last year was a milestone -- the big 3-0, with a big bash to mark it -- so this year I haven't made many celebration plans. As much as I love to travel and explore new places, it truly is wonderful to be home. I don't have any trips planned for a bit, so I'm looking forward to nestling back into my home. I'm back from New Orleans, and what a fantastic trip it was! My friend and I are exhausted but we keep talking and laughing about all the fun things we did and all the amusing things that happened. We ate at so many different restaurants and walked all over the city. We shopped, rode a streetcar, took in incredible architecture, hit the town at night and spent a lovely afternoon lazing by our hotel's rooftop pool. Last night, three of my girlfriends and I got together. We sat outside to enjoy a warm evening, share a bottle of wine and chat. We laughed so hard remembering events from our past and updating each other on recent goings on. But one of my favorite parts of the night was when we talked about how we're liking our age. Now that we're all thirty, we understand ourselves better than ever before. Not that we have everything figured out -- not at all! -- but by and large we know what we like and who we are, and we're more accepting of the qualities and quirks unique to each of us. We're owning them.

This New York townhouse, featured on House to Home, seems to have that confidence. It's eclectic and interesting, and I get the feeling that the furniture, art and accessories all hold special meaning to the person who chose them. When you go with what feels right to you, things kind of work out, don't they?

This was a lovely weekend that brought a mix of activities. Burritos and margaritas with my husband at our favorite little stop on Friday. An art opening and sushi downtown on Saturday. Power washing the house on Sunday (my dad taught me how to do this and it was so much fun!). It was nice to have an easygoing approach to the weekend, to do whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted. I'd like to incorporate this mindset into the new week. I'm going to try to ease into things, and do them when the timing seems right, to be a little kinder to myself.

If I need inspiration, I'm going to think of these amazing paintings by Tracy Rocca. Aren't they incredible? In her artist's statement, she writes, "The imagery I use arises from, first, consistent observation and, second, a conscious effort to slow down." If this kind of beauty stems from a more ease-minded approach, I'm definitely on board!

Remembering

It's hard to believe September 11th happened a decade ago. As we reflect on the terribleness of that day, I'm struck with how quickly and abruptly so many lives were ended, all the plans and dreams that were cut short, all the things each that person left unfinished and unsaid, the chances forever lost to love and live. It makes me more than ever want to appreciate, truly and wholly, all that I have at this moment. Let's all hold our loved ones a little tighter this weekend and think of those who can't do the same.

This long weekend was a wonderful farewell to summer. We had sunny, crisp weather, which felt like the perfect melding of summer and fall, and we spent almost the entire time with family.

Perhaps it's the shift of seasons on my mind, but I've noticed I'm gravitating toward black and white combinations in interior design as well as fashion. It's such a timeless combination that works all times of year, and I'm finding myself adding touches of it everywhere. That's one of the reasons I'm drawn to this home by Sydney designer Greg Natale. I love the crispness of black and white together, along with clean lines, graphic patterns and glamorous chandeliers.

We're heading into a long holiday weekend, with plans to spend time with our families. I'm especially excited to see my nephew. He just turned six months old and I cannot believe how he's changed our lives in such a short amount of time. He's the most incredible little guy -- charming, smart, smiley, curious. He's known as the flirt of his daycare and the only time he seems to get crabby is when he's hungry and his food is taking too long. I pretty much want to spend the entire next three days cuddling and playing with him. Not a bad goal, I think.

No matter how old I get, I'll probably always be a little jittery with excitement when this month arrives.
